wickedneva@comcast.net Subject: February N.E.V.A. Newsletter Date: February 1, 2007 6:21:33 PM EST To: wickedneva@comcast.net Exhibition I’ve submitted two pieces for the Currier Museum’s Staff Art Show entitled “For the Love of Art”. There will be an exhibition preview on Thursday, February 8 from 5-8pm, and I hope to see you there! Most of the work on view will be for sale, including my work. Both of the paintings were done last year, and were inspired by the Botanical Illustration class I taught at the Currier Art Center. One is of a reddish Anemone that I’ve titled “The Dancer” and the other is actually a set of two separately framed paintings of purple “Dandelions”. The show is held at Currier Downtown at 52 Hanover Street in Manchester, NH. Check their website for directions. www.currier.org Online Store I’ve slashed the price of the Christmas cards, so they are now only $11 per box plus shipping, which I’m sure you’ll agree is a steal! I’ve also added five new pieces of artwork which are for sale at a reasonable price. So don’t forget to check it out, and keep it in mind for Valentine’s Day. www.nevaaustrew.com/store.html Grad Land I’ve started a blog that will follow my adventures through Grad Land at the Art Institute of Boston. I figured this would be a nice way for my Academic Advisor, Artist Mentor, and friends to keep up-to-date on my MFA progress. I’d love for you to check it out, especially since this is a low residency program, and not a typical “on-campus” situation where I’m surrounded by teachers and artists constantly. This program forces you to make your own contacts, which I think is great. So feel free to read about my goals, volunteer to edit a children’s story, or comment on artwork that’s been posted. There is a link to the blog on my homepage. http://nevaaustrew.blogspot.com Fully Clothed Models Needed Part of the feedback I got from my first residency at AIB was that I needed to consider expanding on my visual references. In other words, get models to pose for me so that my illustrations are more accurate. So that’s part of the plan this semester! I can’t offer to pay anyone, unfortunately, but what I can do is give you a digital CD with copies of ALL the images taken from our “photo shoot”. I know that’s not much, but keep in mind that if I keep using you or your child as a model, I may eventually be able to pay you! I’m not sure yet of my exact model needs, but basically I’d love to get different children of all ages, races, and genders. If you think you or your child would be interested in volunteering for this, please send me an email, and we’ll arrange a time to have a mini “photo shoot”. www.nevaaustrew.com/models.html Workshop Valentine’s Day is around the corner, but there’s still room in my “Valentine Card” workshop at the Currier Art Center, on Saturday, February 10 from 12-4pm. We’ll be using the art of Eric Carle as inspiration to make our own hand-made cards. Call 603-669-6144, ext. 122 or email artcenter@currier.org if you’re interested in signing up. www.currier.org Freelance I’m hard at work on the New Hampshire Healthy Kids annual report illustrations, and am also getting ready to start designing the Currier Art Center’s Summer Brochure. It’s strange to be thinking about summer when there’s still snow on the ground… www.nhhealthykids.com READ! Last weekend I went to see Tomie de Paola speak at UNH as part of a PBS special. He was as engaging and enjoyable a speaker as I thought he'd be. So in honor of him, this month's recommendation is "Oliver Button Is a Sissy", story and pictures by Tomie de Paola. Tomie draws a lot of inspiration for his children's stories from his own childhood. Oliver Button, like Tomie, was a wonderful tap dancer, but really didn't like to do the things that boys usually do, like play ball. But despite being made fun of by the kids at school, Oliver keeps practicing and practicing his tap dance. He works hard so that he can show them all! And in the end, Oliver Button is no longer a sissy, but a STAR! www.tomie.com |
